      Blood Profile of Sheep Treated and Untreated for Helminth Infections in The Pangalengan Region

      Abstract
      Helminthiasis is a major health problem in sheep that can lead to reduced productivity, anemia, and other physiological disturbances. These infections are commonly caused by gastrointestinal nematodes such as Haemonchus contortus, Trichostrongylus spp., and Strongyloides spp., which can affect hematological parameters including red blood cell (RBC) count, hemoglobin (HGB) concentration, packed cell volume (HCT), and white blood cell (WBC) count. This study aimed to analyze and compare the hematology profiles of sheep treated and untreated with albendazole in the Pangalengan region, West Java. Blood samples were collected from six sheep, including three treated with an anthelmintic and three untreated. Hematological examinations were performed using a hematology analyzer to measure RBC, HGB, HCT, platelets, and WBC parameters. The data were analyzed using an independent Student’s t-test to assess differences between the two groups. Results showed increased WBC values and decreased RBC, HGB, and HCT values in both groups compared with normal reference values. However, no significant differences (p > 0.05) were observed between treated and untreated sheep for all hematological parameters. These findings indicate that albendazole treatment, under the conditions of this study, did not significantly affect the hematological profiles of sheep infected with helminths. This study is expected to contribute scientific information regarding the impact of helminth infection and treatment effectiveness on hematological conditions in sheep.
       
      Infeksi cacing adalah salah satu masalah kesehatan utama pada domba yang dapat mengakibatkan penurunan produktivitas, anemia, dan gangguan fisiologis lainnya. Infeksi ini umumnya disebabkan oleh nematoda saluran pencernaan, seperti Haemonchus contortus, Trichostrongylus spp. dan Strongyloides spp., yang dapat memengaruhi parameter hematologis, seperti jumlah eritrosit (RBC), kadar hemoglobin (HGB), hematokrit, (HCT) serta jumlah leukosit (WBC) dan jenis sel leukosit. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis dan membandingkan profil hematologi pada domba yang menerima dan tidak menerima pengobatan albendazole di wilayah Pangalengan, Jawa Barat. Sampel darah diambil dari enam ekor domba, terdiri dari tiga ekor yang telah mendapatkan pengobatan anthelmintik dan tiga ekor yang tidak diobati, Pemeriksaan hematologis dilakukan menggunakan hematology analyzer untuk mengukur parameter RBC, HGB, HCT, dan WBC. Data yang diperoleh dianalisis secara statistik menggunakan uji Student’s t-test untuk mengetahui perbedaan antara kedua kelompok. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan peningkatan nilai WBC serta penurunan RBC, HGB, dan HCT pada kedua kelompok dibandingkan dengan nilai normal. Namun, tidak ditemukan perbedaan yang signifikan (p > 0,05) antara kelompok domba yang diobati dan tidak diobati pada seluruh parameter hematologis. Data ini menunjukkan bahwa pemberian albendazole pada penelitian ini belum memberikan efek yang signifikan terhadap profil hematologis domba yang terinfeksi cacing. Penelitian ini diharapkan dapat memberikan kontribusi dalam penyediaan informasi ilmiah mengenai dampak infeksi cacing dan efektivitas pengobatan terhadap kondisi hematologi.
