The growth of internet users in Indonesia has encouraged online media to utilize Search
Engine Optimization (SEO) based on search trend data from Google Trends in order to make
their content more discoverable through search engines. Trending issues do not always provide
significant benefit to audiences if they are not properly curated, and may even divert public
attention from more important issues. Previous research has addressed the technical aspects of
SEO, such as keywords, meta descriptions, and the implementation of on-page and off-page
SEO, but has not yet examined in detail how search trend data from Google Trends is utilized
in the process of issue selection within the newsroom. Based on this gap, this study aims to
describe the representation of popular trends in SEO content at Akurat.co, the use of Google
Trends as a basis for issue selection, and SEO optimization strategies through keywords, article
titles, and meta descriptions in representing these trends.
This study employs a mixed-methods approach with an explanatory sequential design, in
which the quantitative data collection stage is conducted first, followed by a deeper qualitative
stage. The research was conducted at PT Akurat Sentra Media from February to May 2026,
focusing on the practice of utilizing SEO and Google Trends in the newsroom. Primary data
were collected through two methods. First, structured interviews with the Editor-in-Chief and
the SEO Managing Editor, aimed at exploring editorial policies in determining issues and how
Google Trends is used in this process. Second, content performance data from Google
Analytics on the ten articles with the highest pageviews during the research period, including
information such as titles, meta descriptions, H2 structures, and presentation angles of each
article. This performance data was then analyzed using a rescaling score technique, allowing
the patterns behind pageview figures to be identified and compared more systematically across
articles.
The results indicate a consistent pattern in titles (H1), meta descriptions, H2 structures,
and presentation angles, with seven articles reframing negative issues into solution-oriented,
educational, informative, or preventive angles; the article "Non-Subsidized Fuel" (BBM Non
Subsidi) recorded the highest performance (401 pageviews) out of a total of 2,680 pageviews
in May 2026. Google Trends was found to function as an initial gatekeeping instrument rather
than the sole determinant of issue viability, being combined at every level with journalistic
sense, social media monitoring, the Journalistic Code of Ethics, editorial control, and changes
in Google's algorithm. Meanwhile, SEO optimization strategies serve a dual role as both
framing devices and reasoning devices, indicating that the representation of popular trends at
Akurat.co is shaped by considerations of search engine algorithms, journalistic values, and
audience information needs.
