      Abstract

Forest fires release greenhouse gas emissions exacerbated by the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) climate anomalies. This study aimed to estimate and compare carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and burned areas in Way Kambas National Park during La Niña (2020) and El Niño (2024) conditions. Emissions were calculated using the Seiler and Crutzen method based on burn severity (RdNBR) from Sentinel-2 imagery and pre-fire biomass from GEDI Level 4A. The results showed that CO2 emissions during the 2020 La Niña totaled 1,293,072.52 tons, with a burned area of 16,726.23 hectares. Under the 2024 El Niño drought conditions, emissions increased to 1,418,888.40 tons with a burned area of 21,241.58 hectares. The increase in emissions in 2024 was driven by the expansion of the affected area and an extreme shift in fire behavior toward the High severity class (soaring by>1,760%). The high combustion efficiency in this extreme severity class became the dominant factor in maintaining high emission accumulation, even though the average pre-fire biomass in 2024 (74.42 tons/ha) was lower than in 2020 (85.94 tons/ha).
