      Abstract

Plant pests and diseases are two of the main problems affecting vegetable productivity. The use of pesticides is one of the most common methods farmers use to overcome this problem. However, improper use of pesticides can cause negative impacts on humans and the environment health. One measure that can be taken to reduce the impact of pesticide use on crop quality is by the implementation of a pre-harvest interval (PHI), which helps reducing pesticide residues in agricultural products. This study aimed to determine the relationship between farmers knowledge and behavior regarding pesticide residues in agricultural products, identify the factors influencing the implementation of PHI, and analyze pesticide residues in agricultural products and pesticide containers. The study was conducted from June to September 2024 in Cipanas District, Cianjur Regency, West Java Province. A farmer survey was conducted through interviews with 50 farmers in three villages, namely Ciloto, Cimacan, and Sindanglaya. The samples tested in the laboratory were taken from farmers' fields where organophosphate pesticides had been applied for the last 7 days before harvest and pesticide residues on packaging after being rinsed several times. Residue content tests were carried out at the Saraswanti Indo Genetech (SIG) Laboratory, Bogor. The results showed that the residues found in the vegetable samples tested in the laboratory were below the Indonesian maximum residue limit. The low residue content was consistent with the farmers' level of understanding of pesticide residues and their implementation of the PHI. The results of rinsing the pesticide bottles showed that rinsing the bottles using the triple rinsing method could reduce the pesticide residue content on the packaging.
