      Abstract

Forests play important role in the hydrological cycle. The conversion of forest land into coal mining areas alters soil physical properties and affects the soil’s capacity to absorb water. This study aimed to analyze the physical characteristics of soil under post-coal mining land at PT Indominco Mandiri and to examine the relationship between infiltration rate and soil physical properties. The study was conducted on four land conditions: natural forest (P0), 24-year revegetated land (P1), 10-year revegetated land (P2), and overburden land (P3). Observed parameters included soil texture, structure, color, bulk density, porosity, field capacity, soil solum, and infiltration rate. Relationships among variabels were analyzed using Spearman correlation. The results showed that the natural forest exhibited the best soil physical quality, while the overburden land showed the opposite condition. Infiltration rate was strongly negatively correlated with bulk density and strongly positively correlated with porosity and field capacity.
