      Abstract

Kalimantan has potential for astronomy but has not been evaluated, while previous studies did not include quantitative seeing estimates based on atmospheric turbulence models as a site-selection criterion. This study aimed to identify the most suitable observatory site in Kalimantan and characterize its atmospheric and astronomical conditions. Site suitability was assessed using Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis with the Weighted Linear Combination method, integrating 12 meteorological, astronomical, topographic, and accessibility variables. The suitability index ranged from 0.098 to 0.704, with the highest values concentrated in northern Kalimantan. The five best candidate sites were identified using a local maximum approach and tested for homogeneity before one representative site, Point 1, at 1,704 m in the mountains of North Kalimantan, was characterized further. Point 1 exhibited darker skies and lower aerosol optical depth than the National Timau Observatory and OAIL but had less than 20% usable nights, lacked a temperature inversion layer, and had an estimated seeing of 5.92 arcsec. These results indicate that Kalimantan's humid tropical climate is the main limitation for long-term professional optical astronomy. Future studies should extend the assessment to climatologically more promising regions of Indonesia, such as East Nusa Tenggara, Sulawesi, and Papua.
