      Abstract

Crystal guava is a horticultural commodity that have high economic value. Its production is often hindered by Bactrocera carambolae infestations. Management of this insect pest on crystal guava generally relies on synthetic insecticides. However, the unwise use of synthetic insecticides can lead to pest resistance, environmental pollution, and pesticide residues on the fruit products. Therefore, a more environmentally friendly alternative management is required through the use of plant-based repellents, such as citronella (Cymbopogon nardus) essential oil. This study aims to evaluate the repellency and persistence of citronella essential oil under field conditions. The research was conducted through three activities: an olfactory response test to observe the behavioral orientation of adult fruit flies, a field test using a randomized block design to evaluate the level of infestation, and a chemical profile analysis using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) to determine the persistence of the treatment. The olfactory response test of citronella essential oil against fruit flies at concentrations of 2 and 4% showed repellency rates of 73 and 87%, respectively. Field testing demonstrated that citronella essential oil has a persistence of up to 14 days, indicated by the absence of fruit fly infestations on the guava fruits at concentrations of 2 and 4%. Citronella essential oil has the potential to be used as an effective repellent, but its field effectiveness depends on the dynamics of environmental factors
