      Abstract

Information on biomass and stand density is a key parameter for describing the structure and functional condition of natural forest ecosystems. In coal mining concession areas, land cover changes may affect vegetation conditions; therefore, an efficient and reliable approach is required to estimate these parameters spatially. One method that can be applied is the Forest Canopy Density (FCD), which utilizes a combination of spectral indices derived from satellite imagery, including the Advanced Vegetation Index (AVI), Bare Soil Index (BI), Shadow Index (SI), and Thermal Index (TI), to estimate canopy density associated with biomass. This study aims to develop spatial models for estimating stand density and biomass based on FCD values in natural forests within the concession area of PT Bharinto Ekatama, located in Damai Subdistrict, West Kutai Regency, East Kalimantan Province, and Teweh Timur Subdistrict, North Barito Regency, Central Kalimantan Province. The research focuses on natural forest areas that have not been subjected to mining activities, representing vegetation conditions with relatively low levels of disturbance. Data collection was conducted from January to June 2025. FCD values were derived from Landsat 8 OLI TIRS satellite imagery (2025) using four main indices: AVI, BI, SI, and TI. Stand density and biomass data were obtained through field measurements based on vegetation diameter across sapling, pole, and tree growth stages, along with species composition identification. Data analysis included the calculation of each index, FCD estimation, biomass estimation using allometric equations, as well as statistical testing through classical assumption tests and model validation. The results show that the stand density and biomass estimation models produced the equations y = 33.016 × FCD – 1,063.5 and y = 6.3283 × FCD – 308.32, with a coefficient of determination of R² = 0.8335 and R² = 0,8317. Both estimation models demonstrate that FCD can explain the variation in stand density and biomass, and both models exhibit good accuracy and a strong fit between predicted and observed values. The developed models can serve as a practical approach for monitoring the spatial distribution and dynamics of stand density and biomass more efficiently over large areas. This information can support forest management planning and contribute to more informed and sustainable land-use decision-making aligned with conservation objectives.
