      Abstract

Arrhythmia represents a spectrum of cardiac electrical abnormalities, ranging from minor to fatal risks. Mathematical modeling serves as a critical tool for elucidating these rhythm disturbances, facilitating early detection. In this study, a heterogeneous coupled Van der Pol oscillator model was extended by integrating nonlinear terms and rhythm-control parameters into the transmembrane current rate equations, formulated as Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs). Morris sensitivity analysis informed the model refinement and was numerically simulated using the Euler method to generate arrhythmic rhythms influenced by the additional terms and parameters. The analysis focused on cardiac morphology, specifically RR intervals, PR intervals, and R-peaks. Sensitivity analysis revealed that two coupling parameters in the Van der Pol model required adjustment, as their inherent rigidity tended to drive the system toward a normal state. The results demonstrate that the proposed development successfully replicates two prominent arrhythmias: tachycardia and first-degree AV block. Furthermore, these control parameter values provide essential data for correlating dynamical patterns with their corresponding clinical arrhythmias.
