      Abstract

Air pollution has become an increasingly significant environmental issue in urban areas due to rapid urbanization, industrial activities, and population growth. Therefore, continuous air quality monitoring is essential to provide timely information to support environmental management and public health protection. However, conventional monitoring instruments are expensive and require complex infrastructure, limiting their implementation in many locations. This study aims to design and develop a portable and low-cost air quality monitoring system based on Internet of Things (IoT) technology. The system utilizes an ESP32-C3 microcontroller integrated with a ZPHS01B multi-parameter sensor to measure PM2.5, CO, O3, NO2, temperature, and relative humidity. Measurement data are processed by the microcontroller and transmitted via an internet connection to a server, where they are stored and displayed through a real-time monitoring dashboard. Sensor performance was evaluated through a 14-day co-location experiment with a reference instrument at the Jakarta Mobile Station (JMS). Statistical analyses using correlation, bias, root mean square error (RMSE), and the Bland–Altman method indicated that the sensor showed high agreement for meteorological parameters such as temperature and relative humidity, while PM2.5 measurements exhibited lower correlation and gaseous pollutants (CO, O3, and NO2) showed larger deviations. Additional calibration methods are still required to improve the accuracy of pollutant measurements obtained from low-cost sensors.
