      Abstract

Bamboo is a lignocellulosic material with high potential but is susceptible to water absorption and biological degradation, necessitating quality improvement efforts. This study aims to analyze the surface characteristics of three bamboo species, namely Betung, Tali, and Ampel bamboo, which were modified chemically and thermally using the Boucherie method. The tested parameters included physical properties (retention, WPG, moisture content, density), macroscopic properties, and surface characteristics covering surface roughness, contact angle, SFE, wettability, and paint adhesion. The results showed that chemical and heat modification significantly increased density and decreased moisture content in the three bamboo species. Betung bamboo exhibited the highest retention and WPG values compared to Tali and Ampel bamboo. The modification treatment resulted in a smoother surface, also enhanced the bamboo's hydrophobic properties, marked by increased equilibrium contact angle values and decreased SFE values. However, this increase in hydrophobicity and surface smoothness led to a decrease in wettability and paint adhesion compared to untreated bamboo.
