      Abstract

Veneer quality in plywood production is influenced by the inherent properties of the wood and the specifications of the peeling knife used during processing. This study analyzed veneers produced from Sengon and Mahogany logs peeled with Kanefusa and Beta knives across three log diameter classes by measuring lathe check length and surface roughness (Ra). The results showed that Mahogany produced veneers with shorter lathe checks and smoother surfaces than Sengon, while the Beta knife outperformed the Kanefusa knife in reducing lathe checks. Analysis of variance revealed a significant interaction between wood species and knife brand on surface roughness, where the Kanefusa knife produced smoother surfaces on Sengon veneer, whereas the Beta knife yielded smoother surfaces on Mahogany veneer. These findings indicate that peeling knife specifications must be optimized according to the characteristics of each wood species to achieve the best possible veneer surface quality.
