      Abstract

The persistence of non-degradable styrofoam has driven the development of more environmentally friendly biofoam materials. This study examines the use of Pleurotus ostreatus mycelium combined with starch, PVA, and magnesium stearate as an alternative material. The biofoam was produced through mixing and hot-pressing processes, followed by tests of mechanical strength, water absorption, and biodegradability. The results showed that starch–mycelium formulations exhibited lower mechanical strength than styrofoam; however, the addition of PVA and magnesium stearate improved structural density and stability. Water resistance increased, and soil degradation occurred more rapidly in the modified formulation. This study demonstrates that biofoam made from starch, mycelium, PVA, and magnesium stearate has potential as an environmentally friendly replacement for Styrofoam.
