      Abstract

Indonesia ranks second as the largest contributor of plastic waste in the world. Most of the plastic waste comes from the use of petroleum-based commercial plastics that are difficult to decompose naturally This research aims to utilize cellulose from paper industry sludge waste as a raw material for making biodegradable polybag plastics. Sludge waste was chosen because of its abundant availability, high cellulose content, and has not been widely used for polybag plastic products. The research methods include the manufacture of cellulose from paper sludge waste, the manufacture of biodegradable polybag plastics, mechanical tests, biodegradability tests, water absorption tests as well as comparisons with commercial plastics. The test results showed that the addition of cellulose from paper sludge waste was able to increase the tensile strength, water absorption and biodegradability of plastic films compared to plastic films without cellulose. The optimal formulation that can be used as biodegradable polybag plastic products and used for tanbang reclaimed plant nurseries is a modified P1 sample.
