      Abstract
What If” film La La Land melalui analisis semiotika konotasi berlanjut Roland Barthes.

This study discusses the representation of dreams and reality in the montage “What If” in the film La La Land through Roland Barthes's analysis of continuing connotations. The focus of the study is not only on the colors of the costumes, but also on the lighting, props, music, expressions, and camera angles as a unified mise-en-scène that shapes meaning. The results show that the dream world in this montage is constructed through cinematic symbols laden with meaning, where colors (blue, yellow, red, white, black, and purple) function as emotional codes that mark changes in mood. Color elements are combined with props, jazz music, lighting, gestures, and camera movements to create an imaginative experience for the audience. From an ideological perspective, this montage constructs a myth about ideal love in popular culture, which Barthes describes as a process of mythologization: an ideal world is formed through cinematic signs to accommodate desires that are unfulfilled in reality. This study confirms that films not only present stories, but also shape cultural realities about love, dreams, and life choices.
