      Abstract

Papua is an island in Indonesia that is still dominated (around 51.4%) by dryland primary natural forests. Primary natural forests are natural forest areas that have not been exploited by humans at all. This study aims to determine the species composition, all-species stand structure, commercial trees, and merbau species, as well as the carbon stock of all species, commercial trees, and merbau species in three permanent plot areas (PUP) of primary natural forest in West Papua. The results of the study show that the stand composition is dominated by Sygium spp. trees, with a percentage of more than 20% in each PUP. The structure of all species forms an inverted J curve, indicating that the stand structure is normal. The carbon storage of primary dryland forests in the all species group ranged from 123.89 tons/ha to 203.97 tons/ha, the commercial tree group ranged from 90.43 tons/ha to 172.20 tons/ha, and the merbau species group ranged from 6.59 tons/ha to 60.05 tons/ha. In the PUP with the time range studied, there was a decrease in estimated carbon storage caused by mortality and fallen trees, which generally occurred in small-diameter trees, while an increase in carbon storage was caused by an increase in tree diameter.
