      Abstract

This research designs and analyzes the performance of IPB campus fiber optic network by comparing the two main topologies of ring and hybrid. The evaluation is based on the parameters of Link Power Budget (LPB), Rise Time Budget (RTB), Q-factor and Bit error Rate (BER) through theoretical calculation and simulation using optisystem software. The results show that both topologies, both theoretical and optisystem simulations meet the LPB and RTB standards with attenuation values of 0,53 dBm to 11 dBm and rise time of 0,24 ns up to 0,30 ns. However, the hybrid topology shows a drastic decrease in Q-factor to 1,98 and an increase in BER up to 2,26 × 10-1 at some points after the splitter. Although the theoretical calculations do not show significant changes, but the optisystem, gives a more realistic picture of the signal losses due to the splitter. Thus, this study concludes that simulation is important in the design of complex fiber optic infrastructures to ensure standards match real conditions.
