      Abstract

Palm oil is often considered the leading cause of deforestation in Indonesia. Deforestation for oil palm plantations is deemed to impact increasing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, the leading cause of climate change. On the other hand, palm oil contributes significantly to Indonesia's economy. Therefore, it is essential to know the effect of deforestation on Indonesia's economy and GHG emissions. A carbon footprint calculation to determine the amount of emissions generated by deforestation and the activities of oil palm plantations and mills needs to be carried out and compared with the value of its economic potential. This study shows that the land-clearing process generates the highest emissions in the early years, while in the following years, it is only sourced from plantation activities and palm oil mills. On the other hand, the economic potential of the palm oil industry is permanent. This study concludes that deforestation in oil palm plantations is economically and environmentally beneficial in the long term. However, further studies need to be conducted on the factors influencing deforestation in oil palm plantations.
