      Abstract

Cadmium is one of the heavy metals that is highly toxic and has been classified as a carcinogen and teratogen to humans. This study examined activated carbon from rambutan seed waste modified using chitosan as an adsorbent for the adsorption of cadmium metal ions. The research results showed that activated carbon from rambutan seeds has a moisture content of 3.89%, ash content of 5.86%, volatile substance content of 18.82%, and the iodine absorption capacity of 1015.45 mg/g, which meets SNI 06-3730-1995 standards. The adsorption of Cd(II) metal ions by the composite adsorbent increased the adsorption capacity from 3.7401 mg/g to 5.8674 mg/g and the adsorption efficiency from 45.06% to 70.62%. The optimum conditions were found at pH 7 for the adsorbate, an adsorbent mass of 0.15 g, and a contact time of 30 minutes for rambutan seed/chitosan composite adsorbent, while the rambutan seed adsorbent at 0.20 g adsorbent mass. The adsorption process of Cd(II) metal by rambutan seed and rambutan seed/chitosan composite adsorbents tend to follow the Langmuir isotherm models.
