Regression analysis is a statistical analysis to predict or explain the relationship between the response variable and one or more explanatory variables. The simplest and most commonly used regression analysis is linear regression, that the model's assumptions are rarely met when applied to financial data, such as the absence of multicollinearity, homogeneity of variance, linear relationship between independent and dependent variables. There is a more flexible model in modeling the response variables known as Generalized Linear Models (GLM). GLM can be said to generalize linear regression because it loosens some assumptions in linear regression. However, it turns out that there is something more flexible than GLM, namely copula regression. Therefore, researchers and practitioners use copula regression to solve the problem of not meeting some of the assumptions of the linear regression model.
Copula regression is often used as an alternative method to overcome the problem of violating the assumptions of the linear regression model. The advantage of using copula regression is that the response variable does not have to follow a certain distribution and copula regression can explain nonlinear relationships. In this study, the copula used were Gaussian copula and Student's t copula.
In general, cases in the financial sector are often found with data whose distribution is not normal or even forced with the assumption of a normal distribution. One of the securities in the financial sector whose movements are uncertain is stocks. Shares are one of the investment instruments whose selling value is based on the performance of the company issuing the shares. Uncertain stock market movements raise risks that come from internal stock issuing companies such as financial statements or the company's financial condition.
The exchange rate is one of the considerations in investing. This is because the fluctuations in the exchange rate will affect changes in the company's income, causing the company's stock price to move. In addition, the movement of stock prices can be seen through the Composite Stock Price Index (IHSG). An increase in stock prices that occurs in certain companies or in whole will cause an increase in the IHSG.
In the identification of the marginal distribution for each variable, an empirical distribution approach that approximates several marginal distributions is carried out. The empirical distribution of the response variables is assumed to have Weibull, normal, and lognormal distributions. The purpose of this research is a case study comparing the results of linear regression analysis with copula regression on the relationship between the stock price of BMRI (Bank Mandiri) and macroeconomic factors. This study uses financial data consisting of BMRI stock price data as response variables, as well as the IHSG and the exchange rate of the rupiah against the USD as explanatory variables. The method used for linear regression estimates the parameters using the Ordinary Least Square method, while for copula regression estimates the parameters with Maximum Likelihood Estimation. The measure of the accuracy of the model used is MAPE (Mean Absolute Percentage Error). The results showed that the two regressions were quite good at modeling financial data. This is shown by the small MAPE value.
