The important role of nitrogen fertilizer in increasing rice yield has been widely recognized, particularly after modern high yielding varieties were developed. Urea is the main source of nitrogen, and urea consumption for food crops in Indonesia has inceased 380% in the last ten years (1972-1982). Unfortunately the efficiency of nitrogen fertilizer in wetland rice culture is low. Based on several experiments in Indonesia, it was estimated that the absorption of fertilizer-N by rice at the farm level is about 30%. Since urea consumption for food crops in 1982 was 2.3 million tons, about 1.6 million tons of urea applied was lost. The efficiency of nitrogen fertilizer on rice is greatly influenced by type and amount of fertilizer applied, method of application and agroclimatic conditions. Recent research has demonstrated that placement of nitrogen fertilizer several centimeters below the soil surface at planting time is usually very effective for flooded rice.
