Faktor pertama adalah tiga spesies tanaman, yaitu V. zizanioides, A. spinosus, dan A. tricolor.
Tanaman
The mining activities and production of gold (Au) increased sharply along with population growth and market demands of gold. This is because gold is a valuable commodity that is extensively used as exchange standard in economic world. The main activity of gold mining is the process of separation of gold ores from the rock using mechanical and chemical processes. The processing of gold ores will produce a pure gold metal which have higher economic value, but on the other hand, that process will produce an outcast of gold mine wastes namely tailing. Basiclly, tailing is the main waste of gold mining activities and it still contains a very low consentration of gold metal. However, it is very unprofitable to recycle the tailing using conventional processes because it requires the expensive operational costs, and it is not worth to obtain gold metal while it may cause harmful to the environment due to chemical contaminants. One of the efforts to develop more economical and environmental friendly process is by utilizing plants to extract gold metal which is known as phytomining. Phytomining is one of the potential alternative methods to absorb and exploit certain heavy metal elements from land or sediment thatcontain low concentration of ores metal, by utilizing hyperaccumulator plantswhich grow well with high biomass production for commercial purposes.
This study aimed to analyze morphological and physiological responses of Vetiveria zizanioides, Amaranthus spinonsus, and Amaranthus tricolor grown on gold mine tailings and their response to chelating agents applied to support gold metal accumulation. The study was conducted using a completely randomized design (CRD) with two factors. The first factor comprised three species of plants:
V. zizanioides, A. spinosus, and A. tricolor while the second factor involved four types of planting media: soil as control (T0), tailings without chelate (T1), tailings in combination withgold-mine liquid waste as chelate (T2), and tailings in combination with ammonium thiosulfate as chelate (T3).
The analysis showed that gold mine tailings caused a decrease in growth of all plants resulted in a significant (P<0,5) decrease of plant height, leaf number, shoot and root dry weight after 8 weeks of treatment. Tailings treatment caused a significant increase of malondialdehyde content in the roots and leaves, while it caused a decrease of chlorophyll, carotenoid, and relative water content significantly (P<0,5) suggesting that the plants under went oxidative stress due to the treatments. The application of chelating agent effectively improve plant growth under tailings treatment, but only ammonium thiosulfate that had ability to lessen oxidative stress effect, while gold mine liquid waste treatment did not have this effect indicated by the highest MDA content and the lowest chlorophyll and carotenoid content in the such treated plants. On the average, chelate application using ammonium thiosulfate induced the highest increase of concentration and uptake of gold (Au). Ammonium thiosulfate chelate also increased Biological Concentration Factor (BCF), Translocation Factor (TF), and Potency of
Phytomining (PP) values. The species that had the highest PP value was V. zizanioides treated with ammonium thiosulfate chelate. Among the three plants, V. zizanioides was the most potential species as phytoaccumulator plant to support gold phytomining program and the application of ammonium thiosulfate is suitable for Au phytomining due to its positive effect on Au accumulation as well as plant growth under gold mine tailing.
