Dampak negatif terhadap sifat mekanis tergolong rendah: modulus of rupture (MOR) hanya berkurang ±6%, sedangkan modulus of elasticity (MOE), kekuatan tekan sejajar serat dan kekerasan cenderung meningkat.
Fast growing teakwood (FGT) has different qualities from conventional teakwood. In general, the strength, dimensional stability and natural durability of FGT is lower with a paler color because it comes from younger stands. Therefore, the quality needs to be improved. Thermal modification, namely mild pyrolysis (MP), was chosen in this study because it is easy to apply and the resulting product is still wood with a color that resembles the color of old teakwood while its characteristics are well improved. Therefore, the aims of this study were 1) to analyze the phenomenon of changes in the characteristics of MP modified wood and evaluate the effect of temperature and hot steam applied, 2) to determine the best MP treatment conditions for each wood and 3) to evaluate the feasibility and suitability of MP modified wood as a raw material for furniture. The test sample was FGT in air dry condition from 5 and 8 year-old stands. The MP process was carried out at temperatures of 170 and 190 °C for 120 minutes in a closed system pyrolysis reactor, both without hot steam (MPNG) and with hot steam (MPS). The treatment duration and the application of hot steam for 30 and 60 minutes were applied after the target temperature was reached. The parameters studied consisted of changes in color, drying defects, physical-mechanical properties, durability and thermal conductivity of wood. The results showed that the MP modified wood had different characteristics from untreated wood. The color of the modified wood changed to dark brown as a result of changes in the chemical composition of the wood and the presence of quinone compounds detected from the FTIR spectra. Dimensional stability of the wood also increased as indicated by the higher anti-shrinkage efficiency (ASE) value. This was influenced by a significant decrease in hemicellulose content which has an impact on reducing the free OH groups so that the ability of wood to adsorb water is reduced. The durability of wood also increased, from durable class IV‒V to durable class II‒III, which associated with increased of lignin content and phenolic compounds that play a role in wood resistance to termite attack. The negative impact on mechanical properties was low i.e. the modulus of rupture (MOR) is only reduced by ±6%, while the modulus of elastic (MOE), compressive strength parallel to the grain and hardness increase. Thermal conductivity value of MP modified wood was lower than that of untreated wood. This indicates that wood is more insulating. This phenomenon is a result of a decrease in moisture content and wood density so its structure became more porous. MPNG treatment at 190 °C is the best condition for FGT aged 5 years, while for FGT aged 8 years is the MP process at 190 °C with the addition of hot steam for 30 minutes. The main factor that significantly affects almost all test parameters is temperature, while hot steam plays a more important role in changing the color and dimensional stability of the wood. The results also showed that the age of the wood has a significant effect on the physical-mechanical properties, durability and thermal conductivity of wood. Because MP treatment takes place at a sufficiently high temperature, the presence of drying defects such as cracks and deformation could not be avoided due to the decomposition of the chemical components of the wood and differences in shrinkage due to the anisotropic properties of the wood. Finally, MP modified wood could be used as raw material for exterior and interior functional furniture products because it is resistant to termites attacks (durable class II‒III) and can carry loads. The MP modified wood was classified as strong class III with a density of >400 kg m-3.id
