Abstract: Karang Mumus river basin zone covering 32,196.3 ha is river basin in East Kalimantan is classified as higher level ofdamage with first priority. At present there is 9, 106 ha marginal area in the river basin. Aim ofthis research was to evaluate and analyze driving factors for agroforestry land'icape management in Karang Mumus river basin. Research conducted in Karang Mumus river basin, a part of Mahakam Hilir sub watershed For that aims, we employed spatial and temporal analysis, land suitability evaluation, social-economics and policy analysis. The evaluation resulted land sUitabilityfor several land utilization. In the river basin land suitable for protected area was classified as highly suitable (SI) covering 8,810.5 ha (27.1%); moderately suitable (S2) covering 12,805.4 ha (39.4%); marginally suitable (S3) covering 7,947.5 ha (24.5%); not suitable (N) covering 2,936.6 ha (9.0%). Land suitability for conservation area was classified as highly suitable (SI) covering 3,475.5 ha (10.7%); moderately suitable (S2) covering 682.3 ha (2.1%); marginally suitable (S3) covering 647.7 ha (2.0%); not suitable (N) covering 27,694.5 ha (85.2%). Land suitability for dryland agriculture was classified as highly suitable (SI) covering 20,009.7 ha (61.6%); moderately suitable (S2) covering 2,237.9 ha (6.9%); marginally suitable (S3) covering 8,580.2 ha (26.4%); not suitable (N) covering 1,672.1 ha (5.1%). Land suitabilityfor agriculture of wetland was- classified as highly suitable (Sl) covering 12,802.5 ha (39.4%); moderately suitable (S2) covering 8,264.5 ha (25.4%); marginally suitable (S3) covering 2,381.0 ha (7.3%); not suitable (N) covering of9,051.9 ha (27.9%). Land suitability for settlement was classified as highly suitable (SI) covering 19,520.1 ha (60.1%); moderately suitable (S2) covering 2,745.7 ha (8.4%); marginally suitable (S3) covering 362.9 ha (1.1%); not suitable (N) covering 9,871.3 ha (30.4%). Based on social-economic analysis, resident's growth rate in Karang Mumus river basin was 4.9ro/year. Prediction of the population in the year of 2012 was 276,756 persons, geographical density was 879 persons/lml, and agrarian density was reached 9 personslha. The driving factors ofagroforestry landscape management in Karang Mumus river basin are policy, socio-economicsculture, and physical-biology factors. The policy factor includes riverbanlc settlement relocation, reforestation and critical land rehabilitation. The socio-economics-cuJture factor includes population growth rate, cultural background ofthe society, andfeas-ibility ofagricultural business.
