dc.description.abstractUtilization of Horizontal Roughing Filter (coarse sieve - HRF) provides an alternative treatment system to improve water quality are distributed, to the provision of clean water without using chemicals, is an alternative treatment that is effective, efficient, low cost, and feasible. Horizontal Roughing Filter (coarse-HRF) is a preliminary treatment to reduce turbidity or solids separating large amounts of organic matter and chemical pollution. Water passes through air or compartment in a porous media such as coarse gravel with different diameter. Large diameter gravel is placed on the face and smaller diameter gravel is in the next section, and so on. A research was conducted to analyze the flow of water and dissolved materials through a horizontal roughing filter. The objective was to improve the quality of raw water river for drinking water treatment, by reducing its turbidity and organic matter content.The use of horizontal roughing filters as alternative method and tool can be conducted on an on going basis. Results obtained from this study building performance HRF as follows: to decrease by 51% the value of turbidity, organic content values can be reduced by 71%, has a flow rate of 53 cm3/sec, and hydraulic conductivity of 31.7 cm/sec.en
