Abstract: | Utilization of a protected area that was not in accordance with its designation, in some cases could support effective area conservation. Vegetation of the Nusa Gede Panjalu Strict Nature Reserve (NGP SNR) established in 1919 for its botanical values is said to be intact conditions although the area has long been used as a site of pilgrimage tourism activity. This research was conducted from August through to October 2011 with the aim to examine how sanctity affects conservation within habitats. The objectives were to examine the role of Sacred Natural Sites (SNS) and measure the management effectiveness of NGP SNR. Data were collected through field observations, flora exploration, interviews and literature studies. The existence of a shrine in NGP SNR was able to preserve the naturalness of the forest vegetation as indicated by the presence of moss and the absence of Macaranga sp. and Mallotus sp., which were generally found in disturbed lowland forests. Through Nyangku ceremony, the village people of Panjalu protected the area and this was also supported by the wishes of the pilgrims for a natural surroundings for the purposes of prayer and contemplation of nature. Pilgrimage tourism, in addition to helping the local community's economy, has also created a collaborative management among the villagers, BKSDA, government of Ciamis Regency, government of Panjalu village and the pilgrims. The sanctity of NGP SNR as a SNS accommodateds a rich interaction among ecological, cultural, religious processes and economic creating an effective protected area management. Results of this study suggested the importance of establishing SNS as a protected area on botanical reason, especially for SNS located within habitats of ecological and ethnobotanical importance. |
