Abstract: | Sulawesi island has a highly endemic fauna, including seven species of monkey of the genus Macaca (macaques). They have a pair of sitting pads named ischial callosities that have a variable shape and were previously only described verbally. Although useful, this verbal description cannot fully describe shape variation, and reconstruction of the shape from verbal descriptions becomes @bjective. Optimal preservation of shape variation and objective shape J:tconstruction can be made by quantitative analysis. This research was conducted ~ perform quantitative analysis of shape of Sulawesi macaques' ischial callosity ~sing two geometric morphometries tools, named Thin-plate Splines and ~eneralized Procrustes Analysis. Two geographically neighbouring macaque wecies, M nemestrina and M jascicu/aris, were also included for comparison. ! he quantitative results gave inferences about ischial callosity shape relationships j-ld path of shape change among Sulawesi macaques species and with the other ~o species. The Sulawesi macaques showed broader variation compared to M JPscicularis and M nemestrina. Variation in Sulawesi macaques was due to IDfferences in the dorsal part and bending of the callosity. There were three types Qf ischial callosity shape in Sulawesi macaques: oval shape without bending (M ~nkeana and M maurus), oval shape with outward bending (M ochreata and M !f'unnescens), and oval or reniform shape with inward bending (M hecki, M ~igrescens, and M nigra). These types are congruent with today's geographical S'istribution of these animals in Sulawesi. The path of ischial callosity's shape ~hanges started from oval shape in central and southern peninsula, and then an 'Outward bending type developed in the southeastern species and an inward bending type developed in the northern species. |
