In vitro culture technology has been studied by indonesian Sugar Research Institute since 1975. This technology is developed to support conventional sugarcane breding program. Methods of rapid seed multiplication and de- virus-ing plants are employed to increase provision of new promising variety plant materails . In vitro selection tecnique are developed to screen varieties againts salinity and Pokahboeng disease . Protoplast fusion has been succesfully done but could not be cultured yet . Effort to obtain haploid plant from anther culture was disappointing . The study of associating simbiotic N-fixer at regeneration stage of cane callus , and the use of Agrobacterium tumif aciens on genetic transformation is progress . Biomolecular technique is being sought to find DNA probe for disease resistant . While identification of varieties through isoenzym analysisis being studied. The use monoclonal antibodyto detect ratoon stunting desease is being developed,id
