Abstract: ANISAH FAUZIYYAH.
ANISAH FAUZIYYAH. Livelihood Assets and Survival Strategies of Oil Palm Smallholders Household: Adaptation to Livelihood Dynamics (Case Study: Indigenous Community of Nagari Kapa, Luhak Nan Duo, Pasaman Barat). Supervised by HERU PURWANDARI. The expansion of oil palm plantations in Nagari Kapa has transformed the agrarian landscape and indigenous livelihood systems from communal subsistence to market monoculture, triggering communal land commodification and the erosion of mutual assistance . This study analyzes livelihood transformation, asset possession, and survival strategies of independent smallholders using a mixed-methods approach involving surveys of 50 households and in-depth interviews. The results that network-based strategies are universal and mandatory, where all farmers rely absolutely on informal networks, particularly kinship and middlemen (tauke). Correlation analysis proves that asset accumulation significantly influences only active strategies, while passive and network strategies act as universal defensive responses to structural pressures regardless of asset ownership . Consequently, the established survival mechanisms tend to be compensatory, perpetuating a dependency trap within non-inclusive informal economic circuits.
