Obesity is a multifactorial condition caused by chronic positive energy balance. This study aimed to analyze how adults in Java perceive obesity, its causes, and prevention. A cross–sectional study was conducted online using Google Forms distributed via the Kudata website and social media, involving 925 adults (751 women and 174 men). The results showed that most participants had good perceptions regarding the meaning and dangers of obesity (79.1%), its causes (67.7%), and prevention (76.4%). The majority of subjects (56.6%) perceived their body shape to match their perceived body size. The correlation test results showed that some demographic and socio-economic characteristics of the subjects were associated with perceptions of obesity and the accuracy of body shape perception. Perceptions of the causes and prevention of obesity were negatively associated with body size perception. Conversely, the accuracy of body shape perception was positively associated with body size perception. Perceptions of the meaning and dangers of obesity were not associated with body size perception.
