Rhizophora mucronata, commonly known as Bakau in Indonesia, is widely vegetated along Indonesian coast and has been used by coastal community for traditional medicine. The previous studies reported that the ethanolic extract of R. mucronata hypocotyls has potentcy as hepatoprotector and antioxidant. However, the astringent R. mucronata extract is not tasty so that it needs to be preserved as a nutraceutical product such as syrup with preferable flavor and taste for the people. To be a dietary supplement or as functional food, the ethanolic extract syrup of R. mucronata hypocotyls must be toxicologically examined to ensure its safety.
