Rainfall variability for 20 years (1 January 2001 to 31 December 2020) at the Sepinggan meteorological station (116o 57'27.53”E and 1o 15'27.53”S) and the Tumenggung meteorological station (117o 9'23.47”E and 0o 28'57.11”S) of East Kalimantan Province were analyzed using spectral techniques. The results of the spectral analysis show that the monthly variability at the two stations is dominated by ITCZ with a period of 182 days (6 months), daily rainfall variability is dominated by BSISO 1 with a period of 30-60 days during the Boreal Summer and MJO with the same period during the Boreal Winter, and annual variability is dominated by Dipole mode, La-Nina, and La-Nina Modoki. Further exploration results show that on an intra-seasonal basis, the MJO only increases rainfall in phase 4 at both stations, while BSISO 1 increases rainfall in phases 2, 3, and 4. While BSISO 2 increases daily rainfall in phase 2 and 3. In general, inter-annual and intra-seasonal variability is stronger during the Boreal Summer. The results of this study are expected to open further research on the variability of rainfall in the East Kalimantan region in support of the development plan for the New Capital City in East Kalimantan.
