Abstract: Kayu balsa (Ochroma pyramidale) merupakan tanaman cepat tumbuh, memiliki kelas awet V, sehingga perlu diawetkan untuk mencegah serangan jamur biru (blue stain). Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui perlakuan pengawet TCMBT dan MBT yang terbaik dalam pencegahan serangan blue stain pada pengolahan kayu balsa. Bahan pengawet yang digunakan yaitu TCMBT dan MBT dengan konsentrasi 0%, 0,2%, 0,4% dan 0,6%. Perlakuan pengawetan dilakukan setelah penebangan, dan setelah penggergajian. Pengamatan serangan blue stain dilakukan pada log sebelum dan setelah penyimpanan, pada kayu gergajian setelah penyimpanan, dan pengeringan. Lama penyimpanan log maupun kayu gergajian masing-masing 2 minggu. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan penggunaan pengawet TCMTB/MBT 0,6% efektif mencegah serangan blue stain pada log kayu balsa. Penggunaan pengawet TCMTB/MBT 0,4% dapat mencegah pertambahan luas serangan blue stain pada kayu gergajian sebelum dikeringkan. Pada kayu gergajian yang telah dikeringkan tidak ada pertambahan luas serangan blue stain. Konsentrasi pengawetan TCMTB dan MBT yang direkomendasikan untuk pencegahan blue stain pada log yaitu 0,6% sedangkan pada kayu gergajian 0,4%.
Balsa wood (Ochroma pyramidale) is a fast growing plant, has a durability class V, so it needs to be preserved to prevent blue stain attacks. This study aims to determine the best preservation treatment of TCMBT and MBT in preventing blue stain attack in balsa wood processing. The preservation used TCMBT and MBT with concentrations of 0%, 0,2%, 0,4% and 0,6%. Preservation treatment was carried out after felling, and after sawing. Observation of blue stain attack on log was carried out before and after storage, while on sawn wood, was after sawing, after storing, and after drying. The storage period of logs and sawn wood were 2 weeks. The results showed that the use of 0.6% TCMTB/MBT preservative effectively prevented blue stain attack on balsa logs. The use of 0.4% TCMTB/MBT preservative can prevent the expansion of blue stain attack on sawn wood before drying. There was no increase in the area of blue stain attack on sawn wood after kiln drying. The recommended concentration of TCMTB and MBT for the prevention of blue stains on logs is 0.6% while for sawn wood it is 0.4%.
