Neospora caninum is a protozoan parasite that causes neosporosis in ruminant cattle such as cows and buffaloes. Aside from its economic value, buffalo also has an important cultural value for traditional ceremonies in certain places. Neosporosis in buffaloes can cause economic loss in many countries. Data on the neosporosis incidence in buffalo in Indonesia is very limited. This study aimed to detect the presence of Neospora caninum (N. caninum) infection from 36 archived buffalo serum samples taken from 10 sub districts of Sumba Timur Regency using the indirect ELISA test method. Based on the serological test, the antibody against N. caninum was detected in all sub districts of the sample origin and 7 subdistricts found to have a seropositive proportion of 100%. The total proportion of N. caninum infection found in buffalo at Sumba Timur Regency is 77,78%. This is the first study that shows serological evidence of N. caninum infection in buffalo in the Sumba Timur Regency. Improvement of N. caninum epidemiology data needs to be done to control and prevent the spread of the disease. |
