The population of local duck is relatively high in Indonesia but they do not have an important role in the national economic activites due to many limitations which pose somechallenges to solve them. This paper presents information on technologies which have beengenerated and developed and also problems in the waterfowl industry . Utilization of localwaterfowl in commercial production is a very good alternative for reducing the dependence onimport of egg and meat. Crossing with muscovy duck can increase the potential of local duckswhich are mainly layer type in producing crossbreds with more meat, faster growth and lowmortality. Improvement of egg production can be achieved through crossbreeding, selection within breeds, and improvement in management which includes controlling age of puberty, correct diet formulation, and efficient rearing system. Increasing the role of waterfowl in theeconomic activites in Indonesia may be achieved through the development of informationcenter and government involvement in the commercialization of local breeds of livestockid
