This paper was written based on the results of pekarangan (Indonesian home garden) research, which has been held since 1995 up to now. Ecologically, pekarangan is an integrated land system, which has strong relationships between human as the owner and cultivated plant, animal and fish. Indonesian communities have practiced pekarangan as traditional agroforestry since from a long ago. Under the tree storey they cultivate starch crops, bulbs, sereals for food; some spices, medicines, vegetables, fruits crops, also poultry or cattle, as well fish in the pond. Pekarangan is a potential land for agriculture production, germplasm resource bank, and good green space for Carbon sequestration. Empowering pekarangan based on local wisdom, could be promotted as a productive land, whether for subsistance or commercial purpose in the agregate of a region. Therefore, pekarangan has a role on food security in the village level and also for agrobiodiversity conservation. Based on the conference result of National Food Security Board (2010), it's supposed to be a model of "Des a Mandiri Pangan ", especially to revitalize pekarangan land in order to produce a local resource based food. In 2009 it was published a decree of President of Republioc of Indonesia (Peraturan Presiden RI) No. 2212009, regarding the policy of the local resources based for the acceleration of food-consumption-assortment. One of the program is pekarangan revitalization.en
