Abstract

Community empowerment program as an approach to introduction of silage as an alternative for sustainable quality forage availability at KPSBU dairy farmer have been conducted through 5 implementing activities. They were: 1) improvement of farmer knowledge and skill on providing quality forage, 2) improvement of farmer knowledge and skill on preservation technique based on local resources, 3) improvement of farmer knowledge and skill on silage quality evaluation and its inclusion in ration, 4) distribution of silage technology through training of trainer, and 5) empowerment and external evaluation of the program. Improvement of farmer knowledge and skill on providing quality forage have been done through training that have been conducted for 20 dairy farmer represent milk collected area. The farmer had been taught about different type of forages and how they should be cultivated. The farmer were involved in one day lecture, demo plot and practicum activities. The farmer was positively reactive to the training with a lot of enthusiastic. Improvement of farmer knowledge and skill on forage preservation technique based on local resources were started from identification of local resources including forage characteristic for ensiling, precondition should be done and additive should be give prior to ensiling as well as available silo. The training have been done three times namely: 1) lecture and demo plot, 2) practicum of small scale silage making and 3) practicum of large scale silage making. Identification of forage characteristics showed that precondition of chopping and bruising was necessary prior to Napier grass ensiling as well as addition of WSC. The farmer have a lot of enthusiastic to the training because improved their knowledge and confident in using silage for their own cattle purposes.
