Four experiments were conducted to study the effect of light and the role of seed coat in the gennination of papaya seeds. First, papaya seeds were sowed on sand media, steril and non steril, and incubated in dark and light conditions. Second, intact, partially hulled and naked papaya seeds were sowed on sand media and incubated in the dark condition. Third, papaya seeds that had been air, sun and ovendried for 3 days were sowed on sand media and incubated in the dark condition. Fourth, papaya seeds, 2 g of each, were planted in sand media, incubated in the dark and light conditions. Water absorbtion was n:easured by weighing the seeds at 0, 3, and 6 days after planting.id
