dc.description.abstractSmall ruminant (goat and sheep) owns a good potential for further progress. In view of the Population, in 1998 it reaches 3264 thousand head for the sheep and 1699 thousand head for the goat. While, other potential point is the support of the availability of source of forage (local resource) can still be obtained from the field, land herding and from other dry herding land. This research is intended to place the farming system characteristic and its perspective development. This research was implemented in 1998 in Garut and Sukabumi regency as representative area for sheep and goat, respectively. Number of sample household is 60 farmers, which was selected randomly. Result of the research are summarized: (1) Average of ownership is 14 and 7 head of sheep and goat, respectively; (2) The education level of the farmers in general is not graduated (81.9 %) and graduated (84.4 %) from elementary school; (3) The average profit are Rp 804 688.95 for sheep and Rp 159 161 for goat; (4) The generally farming system is a combination between stall and liberated. system, which 70.0 % for sheep and 83.4 % for goat; (5) One of- the effort to faHening up the livestock Government of support the development through the gemar rampak program since 1991/92 until 1995/96, by planting the King grass in 6 Regency (include Garut regency), as well as other development program that has been carried out like the sheep and goat farming system, livestock intensification paHern and other program; (6) With the improvement of the development, it is hope the small ruminant population with beHer livestock quality can be achieved, knowing that the demand toward the small ruminant product is relatively huge; (7) In the future development perspective, the development of small ruminant livestock is not limited only as the on-farm, but the business livestock is more into market oriented, thus the system of livestock business is in need for further management in order that the small ruminant-base livestock business is an agribusiness system.
