This experiment was carried out in a glass house at Bogor Research Institute for Estate Crops from October to December 1983. Seedlings and stem cuttings of Stevia were used as plant materials and planted in plastic pails each containing 5 kg Latosol soil with various water tensions of pF 1.00 (52.4%), 2.00 (47.6 %), 2.54 (43.0 %), 3.50 (37.9 %) and 4.20 (30.1 %) respectively, and grown for 8 weeks. The fastest growth rate and the best growth condition of leaves, stems and roots were reached by Stevia cuttings which were planted on Latosol soil with pF 1.00. But the highest sugar content of the leaves were obtained by Stevia cuttings (3.43 %) and seedlings (2.83 %) grown at pF 3.50 and 2.54 respectively.id
