      Abstract
Curcuminoid was the main compound of curcuma which merit to improve human health. However, curcuminoids have low bioavailability. Encapsulation of curcuminoid compounds into solid lipid nanoparticle, can increase the bioavailability of curcuminoid. This study aimed to do characterization and determine acute toxicity of curcuminoid loaded solid lipid nanoparticle in female Sprague-Dawley rats. Acute toxicity methods used by OECD423 (2001) with limit dose (2000 mg/kgBW and 5000 mg/kgBW) included parameters of body weight and behavior, analysis of liver and kidney function and observation of histopathology. The particle size of curcuminoids nanoparticle was 140.1±40.4 nm with polidispersity index was 0.294 and entrapment efficiency was 97.83%. Acute toxicity studies showed that animal deaths was not found in all groups until 14th day after treatment. During the treatment, rat’s body weight was not significantly increased. Clinical symptoms of rats (behavior, eye conditions, feces, and fur skin) remained constant. AST and ALT activities werenot significantly decreased (p>0.05). Blood urea level was significantly decreased between before and 14th day after treatment. The histopathology results showed that liver and kidneys rats were not damaged.
