Mahogany bark is wood industrial waste. Mahogany bark potency as lowering blood cholesterol levels in hypercholesterolemic rats. Decreasing cholesterol levels alleged by inhibit HMG-CoA reductase enzyme. This research was designed to compare the inhibition of HMG-CoA reductase enzyme from extracts and nanoparticle extracts of mahogany bark. This research consist of four stages that begin from extraction of mahogany bark with aquades solution, production nanoparticles using ionic gelation method, biological activities or cytotoxicity using brine shrimp lethality test (BSLT), and measuring inhibition of HMG-CoA reductases by spectrophotometric method. Mahogany bark extract has yield 9% and nanoparticle extracts has yield 53.31%. Biological assay of extracts and nanoparticle extracts showed LC50 value of 1255 ppm and 1567 ppm, respectively. The highest percentage inhibition of HMG-CoA reductase enzyme value from extracts 150 ppm and nanoparticle extracts 300 ppm are 26% and 16%, whereas the inhibiton by positive control (pravastatin) is 21%. Extracts and nanoparticle extracts of mahogany bark capable of acting as an inhibitor of the HMG-CoA reductase enzyme.
