Cost Benefit Analysis and Strategy Of Controlling anthrax at Sumbawa Island, West Nusa Tenggara Province.

Abstract

Sumbawa Island is an anthrax endemic area. Efforts for anthrax control is by vaccination, particularly in cattle and buffalo. The purpose of this research is to conduct cost-benefit analysis of the two scenarios of anthrax control in Sumbawa Island, namely program A, anthrax control program has been conducted at this time on Sumbawa Island with vaccination coverage < 50% which was compared with program B, anthrax control that are intended to reduce the prevalence by vaccination coverage > 80% and to analyze the anthrax control strategies in Sumbawa Island. The results of cost-benefit analysis of anthrax control in cattle and buffalo are : both programs provide a positive NPV and IRR which is greater than the discount rate, but the criteria for B/C ratio of program A in cattle has a B/C ratio > 1 on the discount rate of 15% and 20%, while the B/C ratio > 1 of program B is only obtained in buffaloes with a discount rate of 15%. By considering the three criterias of cost-benefit analysis, it can be stated that the anthrax control in Sumbawa Island with vaccination coverage < 50% is a proper and efficient control if it is compared with anthrax control with coverage > 80% or without control.

Pulau Sumbawa adalah satu dari dua pulau utama Provinsi NTB yang memiliki potensi peternakan yang cukup besar. Sistem peternakan umumnya dengan melepas ternaknya di ladang pengembalaan. Tantangan dalam peningkatan produksi peternakan di Pulau Sumbawa salah satunya karena adanya kejadian antraks hampir setiap tahun.
