Screening of F7 Rice Lines Derived from a Cross between IR64 and Hawara Bunar Under Iron Stress
Penapisan Galur-galur Padi (Oryza sativa L.) Populasi RIL F7 Hasil Persilangan antara Varietas IR64 dan Hawara Bunar terhadap Cekaman Besi
Abstract
Utilization of marginal lands such as tidal land should be done to increase rice production. The main constraints hampered rice cultivation in that area are low soil fertility, soil acidity and Fe toxicity. Fe-tolerant varities are needed to overcome those problems. Screening for Fe-tolerant character of 300 rice lines from the F7 RIL population derived from a cross between rice var. IR64 and genotype Hawara Bunar using hydroponic technique under 750 ppm Fe resulted 221 Fe-tolerant lines. The field test at the lowland with high Fe content in the Experimental Station of Taman Bogo, Lampung resulted 3 Fe-tolerant lines, which were IRH195, IRH548 and IRH715. Verification and optimization of Fe tolerance screening method using 3 Fe-tolerant lines, 3 Fe-sensitive lines and 6 rice varieties using hydroponic technique under 1000 ppm Fe showed consistant result with the field test result. The hydroponic technique with half concentration of Yoshida solution under 1000 ppm Fe colud be used as a screening method for Fe tolerance in rice.
