In the Berau regency, the Annonaceae (excluded thos which are
cultivated) is represented by ten different groups (Uvaria-group, Desmos-group,
Xylopia-group, Mitrephora-group, Mitrella-group, Miliusa-group, Meiogynegroup, Fissistigma-group, Monocarpia-group, and Mezzettia-group) and consist of
40 species belonging to 21 genera. One species, Artabotrys hexagonolobus will be
proposed as new to science. Most of the species grow at low altitude usually well
under 1000 m altitude, whereas some Orophea species have been recorded from
more than 1000 m altitude. The Annonaceae are used for several purposes, for
example: medicine, food, and building material by local people elsewhere.
However, the knowledge of this utilization is still very meager locally at Berau
and could be better explored for the benefit of the local people.
