Abstract

Coconut crab is the mostly success cnustacean in adaptation at terrestrial habitat. The crab is wide distributed from West Pacific to Eastern of Indian Ocean. In the area, the crab habits at stony islands in the ocean. The crab is also found at coastal area near and generally is not found at atol of the coral reef because of limitation on food. Existence of the crab at nature is mostly apprehension. The crab categorized to be scarce and vurnarable species, but they are still caught by many people because their economical value. This study aims to observe eggs hatching of the coconut crab at laboratory. Study had been done for 8 months from March to November 2009 in domestication pond located at Citarate Village, Lebak District, Banten Province. The domestication pond is consisted of hatching pond (2x2x1,5m3) and rearing pond (5x6x1 m3) which is consisted of 22 ponds sized 1x1x1,2 m3. The coconut crab were fed by coconut, boiled small anchovy, com and vegetables. The ponds were supported by smaller pond inside to stock fresh and marine water. Ovigerous female coconut crab was around 3,7 - 4,6 cm in thorax length (or 0,285-0,545 kg body weight). Development of eggs at abdomen was started from yellowish to orange in colour. Eggs number varied from 300 to 600. The eggs hatched to be larvae after 7-15 days.
