      Abstract
Vinyl acetate is a toxic substance, but has a high comercial value. This work showed that vinyl acetate is subject to microbial degradation. It was hydrolyzed by bacterium V2 to ethanol, acetaldehyde and acetate at rate of 8.8 mM vinyl acetateh. The bacterium V2 grew on 20 mh4 vinyl acetate with a doubling time (td) at 2.1 h. The attained maximum cell biomass and yield coefficient (U) were 1 0,65 g cell weightlliter medium and & 33 g cell weighurnole substrate, respectively. The isolate V2 showing the highest vinylacetateesterase acivity, as it was grown on ethanol and the highest cell biomass attained, as it was grown on vinyl acetate. On acetaldehyde, however, isolate V2 exhibited the slowest growth rate, the lowest cell biomass, and the lowest vinytacetate-esterase activity.
