      Abstract

This study was conducted to evaluate essential oils as feed additives on rumen fermentability and livestock performance through a meta-analysis approach. A total of 23 studies consisting of 76 data points from 2007 to 2021 were tabulated using Microsoft excel 2016 and analyzed using SAS software version 9.4 with parameters related to rumen fermentation, and livestock performance. Based on the analysis of essential oil supplementation, it showed a very significant decrease (P<0.01) to the ammonia and acetate proportions and a significant decrease (P<0.05) to the total VFA and tended to decrease significantly (P<0.1) to the ratio acetate:propionate. Essential oil supplementation was positively correlated to increase (P<0.05) the proportion of butyrate, dry matter digestibility, and body weight gain. It can be concluded that essential oils can reduce ammonia concentration so that nitrogen utilization increases. The decrease in acetate and acetate:propionate ratio indicates that essential oils have the potential to reduce methane gas production.
