masih hanya sebatas pakan ternak.
dibandingkan mulsa berbahan plastik murni.
Mulch is a ground cover around plants to create better soil conditions for
increasing crop yields. The use of mulch in Indonesia has been widely applied to
various vegetable crops and is very well used in tropical climates. Generally, the
raw material for making mulch is plastic. Plastic mulch is very effective in
controlling moisture and temperature at night. The type of plastic used for the
manufacture of plastic mulch is Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE). The
use of LLDPE as a mulch-making material has the advantage of being flexible,
waterproof, and easy to process into thin sheets. Recently, many studies have been
conducted to explore the natural resources of non-wood lignocellulosic fibers as
fillers in synthetic polymers. It aims to improve the mechanical properties of
plastics and increase the proportion of biodegradable materials. One of the natural
fibers used in this study is corn husks because the use of corn husks is still limited
to animal feed. Based on previous research, in this study, corn husks were extracted
first in order to obtain cellulose. In addition, mulch made of plastic is susceptible
to damage by exposure to sunlight, therefore in this study Tinuvin P was added as
a UV stabilizer. So that biomulch has a slower rate of photodegradation than mulch
made from pure plastic.
This study aims to produce biomulch from LLDPE and cellulose from corn
husk with the addition of Tinuvin P as an UV stabilizer. Later, the effect of corn
husk cellulose and Tinuvin P on biomulch’s mechanical properties, thermal
properties and optical properties will be investigated. Cellulose extraction was
carried out by alkalizing and bleaching processes on corn husks. Furthermore, the
cellulose that has been produced is pretreated with solvent exchange methods in
order to reduce the hydrophilic properties of the cellulose and help Tinuvin P mix
in LLDPE. Step of producing biomulch consists of mixing materials and pressing
materials into thin sheets. Variations used in the manufacture of biomulch are the
concentration of cellulose (0%, 5% and 10%) and the concentration of Tinuvin P
(0.1%, 0.3% and 0.5%).
The results showed that the addition of cellulose caused the biomulch tensile
strength to be smaller than the sample without cellulose. However, when viewed
from the group of cellulose added biomulch samples, the addition of Tinuvin P
could increase the tensile strength value, although not significantly. Based on the
results of statistical tests, the concentration of Tinuvin P has no effect on the
biomulch tensile strength value. In the analysis of functional groups of cellulose
samples after solvent exchange, there are still O-H functional groups remaining.
This causes the cellulose tends to agglomerate and can reduce the tensile strength
and elongation values of cellulose. Based on the results of the functional group
analysis of biomulch, there were absorption peaks of each typical functional group,
namely LLDPE, cellulose, and Tinuvin P. In the results of the thermal test using
DSC, with the addition of cellulose and Tinuvin P, the melting point value of the
biomulch decreased even though it was not significant. This indicates a change in

the biomulch structure. The results of the UV-Vis absorbance test showed that the
biomulch sample absorbs UV light in the wavelength range of ultraviolet light. This
shows that Tinuvin P in the biomulch has the ability to absorb UV light in the
wavelength range of 300 nm - 400 nm. Based on mechanical testing of the biomulch
after being exposure by ultraviolet irradiation for 20 days, it was shown that the
addition of Tinuvin P and cellulose could slow down the rate of photodegradation.
The decreasing in biomulch tensile strength and elongation value was less than that
of pure LLDPE film.
