The Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) and Northerly Cold Surge (NCS) have been known to cause increased precipitation, with the capacity to trigger hydro-meteorological disasters in the Indonesian Maritime Continent (IMC). However, further investigations are required regarding the interaction between these phenomena on precipitation and vorticity pattern. Therefore, this study aims to analyze and further understand the effect of MJO, NCS, and the interaction on vorticity and precipitation patterns over western IMC in the period of November, December, January, and February. Furthermore, this study examines the performance of the Sub-seasonal to Seasonal (S2S) model in simulating the pattern of precipitation and vorticity related to those phenomena.
This study utilized land-based rainfall observation data from 4329 weather observations and rain stations during 1989 to 2018. Quality control was performed based on data availability exceeding 70% over a 30-year period resulted in 303 selected stations to be used for further analysis. The RMM index and ERA-Interim reanalysis data were used in the identification of MJO, NCS, and vorticity calculations. Furthermore, the S2S model precipitation and wind forecasts were used to assess the model's performance.
Composite analysis of daily precipitation and vorticity showed that the interaction between the MJO and NCS was able to increase precipitation up to 5 mm/day. The presence of NCS in the interaction between MJO and NCS canincrease precipitation by about 68% compared to when only the MJO is active, with maximum increase in areas exposed to the sea and have direct access to the wind-terrain interaction such as northern Sumatra, Riau Islands, West Kalimantan, and the northern coast of Java.
The MJO shows a dominant influence on its interaction with the NCS. The anomaly of precipitation in northern Sumatra, around the Karimata Strait, and Java in the interaction between the MJO and the NCS is in line with the wet and dry phases of the MJO. The 850 hPa wind anomaly also shows the dominance of the MJO features, with easterly wind anomalies dominating in the MJO phases 1 to 3
and westerly anomalies in phases 4 to 6. Likewise, the vorticity shows the dominance of the MJO up to 100 hPa, while the NCS feature in the vorticity dominates the lower atmospheric layer.
The S2S model has a low to moderate ability in statistically predicting the daily precipitation intensity and vorticity over study area. Better capability is obtained in the spatial analysis of the effect of MJO on precipitation and the impact of NCS on absolute vorticity. In the interaction between the MJO and the NCS, the S2S model precipitation forecast is able to represent the impact of the MJO on rainfall better. Therefore, this model has the potential to be used as a reference for producing weather forecasts related to the MJO.
